~Takeout Doubles: Through What Level?

Print

There is a place on your Convention Card to indicate the level to which your double is for takeout rather than double. What does your card show?

You are South. RHO opens 4H. You are vulnerable; the opponents are NV. What is your bid holding
S AQJT
H 2
D AQJT
C AQJ6

Do you double for penalty or for takeout?

The opponents hands are
West
S 7643
H 4
D K643
C 5432

East
S2
H AQJT98765
D 52
C 7

The North hand
S K985
H K3
D 987
C KT98

Regardless of what may be marked on their Convention Card, most players double for takeout through 4H (or higher) whenever partner has not bid.
