North should open 1H overcalled by East with a double. This is a takeout double, asking partner to “takeout the double to his best suit.” Unless holding 17+ points, the doubler shows 4 spades and at least three cards in each side suit except hearts–and promises heart shortness. The doubler promises to pass responder’s next bid in an uncontested auction unless holding a big hand.

Here, South might venture 2H, in which case West should bid 3D. If South passes the Takeout Double, West would jump to 3D with 10-12 HCP or Total Points but would make a simple raise with less than 10 HCP/TP.

East-West should compete to 4D and double any other bid by the opponents for penalty.
