~A Comparison of Systems

The Evolution of Bridge Bidding
1.
Old: opening 4-card majors in first or second seat.
New: a major-suit opening in the first two seats guarantee 5+ cards. Many play 5-card majors in all suits.
2.
Old: strong, forcing jump raises such as 1S-3S.
New: invitational jump raises (11-12 pts.), particularly in the major suits.
3.
Old: strong, forcing opening two-level bids (all suits).
New: opening weak two bids in diamonds, hearts, and spades.
4.
Old: strong jump overcalls by responder, such as 2S over the opponent’s 1C/1D/1H.
New:  jump overcalls by responder are weak and preemptive.
5.
Old: 2/1 responses ( 1 of a major-2 of lower-ranking suit) to show at least game invitational values (10+ HCP).
New: Same bid shows game-forcing values (12+ HCP).
6.
Old: a non-forcing 1NT response to a major-suit opening bid to show 5-10 HCP.
New: a forcing 1NT response to a major-suit opening bid to show 6+ HCP.
7.
Old: a cue-bid of the enemy suit to show a powerful hand (other players have not bid a suit or made a NT call).
New: a cue-bid of the enemy suit in this situation to show a strong or weak two-suited hand.
8.
Old: Opening bids in NT with ranges of 16-18, 22-24, or 25-27 HCP.
New: Opening bids in NT with ranges of 15-17 or 20-21 HCP.
9.
Old: Natural two-level suit responses to opening NT bids.
New: Transfer responses to NT bids.
10.
Old: 1 major-3  same major showed 3+-card support.
New: This bid promises 4-card support.
11.
Old: 1 major-2 same major show 6-9 HCP.
New: Same bid shows 8-10 playing points. 1M-3M shows 3+ card support and 11-12 Total Points. 1M-4M shows 5-card support and about 6-9 HCP.
12.
Old: 1 minor- 1 of a suit, then 2NT  by opener showed about 16 HCP.
New: Same sequence shows 18-19 HCP.
