~Playing Card Combinations #1

You need three tricks in this suit. There are no transportation problems. How do you proceed?

Playing the K and finessing the J is a 50-50 proposition. If the finesse fails, you will take three tricks only when there is a 3-3 split. Odds favor playing the ace and leading low toward the K. Then lead toward the J. This sequence wins three tricks unless East holds four or more cards including the Q.

If you need four tricks, the odds are poor. You need a 3-3 split (about 1/3 of the time) plus the Q must be in the West hand. Though the chances of success are slim, play the K and then finesse the J.
